Thursday was a very special day for us – it was Teddy’s birthday!
Teddy turned 5 on September 21. Obviously since he is a rescue we have no way of knowing if this is his actual birthday, but it’s the day the humane society said was his birthday so it’s what we go with 🙂 For Teddy’s birthday we had a little celebration complete with presents and special treats!
For Teddy’s birthday we basically used it as an excuse to get some new puppy things we had been looking at for a while, haha. The first thing we got him was a giant version of his favorite toy, lambchop…it’s as big as he is!! And then we also got him something more practical – a set of stairs he can use to get up on the bed!
He has no trouble getting up on the couch by himself, but his little legs aren’t quite strong enough to jump up on our bed. He was a little scared at first but now he uses them all by himself!
Since I’m really ridiculous I also wanted to make him a special treat to eat. I found a really good tutorial for a puppy cake on youtube, and wanted to share it with you here! Here’s the video, originally by Tasty Delights on youtube…and here’s the recipe written out!
Ingredients
- 2 cups rice flour
- 2 bananas
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 2/3 cup water
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/3 cup honey
- doggy treats for decorating (optional)
Ingredients for frosting:
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup cream cheese
- 2 tsp honey
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Add bananas and eggs to a bowl and mash together until they have a liquid consistency. You can use a stand mixer or hand mixer for this or just mash by hand.
- Add all other ingredients and combine until well mixed.
- Pour cake batter into pans and cook for about 30 minutes. Let cakes cool completely until they are no longer hot to touch.
- For the frosting, combine the peanut butter, cream cheese, and honey until well mixed.
- Top cake(s) with frosting and doggie treats!
And here’s what it looked like:
Eggs and bananas pre-mashing…
All mashed up! Now just to add everything else in:
In the recipe it called for rice flour, but I didn’t have any so I used regular white flour. Since it’s alright for dogs to have it in moderation and Teddy never eats people food otherwise, I figured it would be fine to substitute! Additionally the actual recipe called for 1/3 cup water along with 1/3 cup of lactose free milk, but I definitely did not have that on hand haha so I used 2/3 cup of water instead.
Also, I’m not a real adult so I only have a few measuring cups, therefore most of my measurements were just me eyeballing it haha
All mixed up! Next step is to pour into the pans – in the video, she used thin cake pans but since Teddy is such a tiny puppy I decided to make him some cupcakes instead.
Next I stuck them in the oven to cook for about 30 minutes.
Here’s what they looked like when they came out of the oven!
A little crackly, but fine! I did try a bit because I was curious and obviously it’s people-safe…it mostly tasted like a bland bread haha
Next up we’ll make the frosting. This part was actually easier than making frosting for humans, imo – I just whipped together some peanut butter and cream cheese along with a bit of honey.
Here’s what it looked like when it was mixed:
I could have just spread it on there with a knife, or honestly just left off the icing all together, but I already am making my dog cupcakes so clearly I’m not above doing ridiculous things. Therefore I decided to pipe the icing on with a plastic bag like a real cupcake.
I snipped the corner off of a big ziploc bag just like the pros taught me to do, and I used this little star shaped tip that I have. I got this massive set of frosting tips from Target around Christmas last year so I have a bunch of different ones but I chose this one haha
Then I put the bag into a cup so I could put the icing inside (also taught to me by the pros aka youtube). Then I piped it onto the cupcakes to decorate!
I topped it off with one of Teddy’s favorite treats, these little chewy milk bones. I broke them in half because it looked better. They made the cupcakes look so cute!!!!
Then it was time to serve! It’s such a silly thing to make your dog cupcakes right? But it was honestly super easy and the time put in was worth it, because I think Teddy LOVED them:
I’d say he enjoyed it:
I only gave him one so I obviously have a lot left over haha but I put a bunch in the freezer too so they’ll make good treats for him in the future!
I hope you enjoyed this silly post and maybe even the recipe too if you have a dog with a birthday coming up! Teddy sure loved his pupcakes and I think he had a great birthday 🙂
Thank you for reading as always! <3 Kaela
